Talking Points 8 June, 2011

Next week

So far we are Guest speaker –less so perhaps we can have a brainstorming session on where we want to go with the future of the club, so everyone can have a say.. Ideas please.

This week

We have Damien McConnell from Mindstore Australia visiting us again, he has been before and is always welcome as he tries to get us to think differently about our work/life/Rotary balance.

Last week

(From Jacq’s notes..)
We all enjoyed listening to Chris and his past experiences with Ground Hogs and his future, thanks to Rotary (sorry had to plug us again!) with Thiess.  As Chris mentioned, his visa 457 has been approved which allows him temporary residency until Thiess complete the process and put him forward for permanent residency.  Ann and Chris have been house hunting as they will have to leave us (and the shoebox flat they are currently staying in!) and move to North Lakes, Brisbane very soon – we wish them both luck and success in the future.

Congratulations to Doug for the fantastic Salvo fund raising he organised for Red Shield Day last Sunday over $1300 from our club – Ken should wear his combo gear again next year as he received a single donation of $50 (think it was from a woman….) – a big thankyou to Eva, Ken, Jacq, Catherine & David and of course Doug for volunteering their time.

Julie mentioned the Cancer Council Race Day 20 Aug $60 she is organizing, contact Julie for more information

The club decided at this morning’s meeting to donate $200 to the legacy fund set up for the young policeman, Damian Leeming, who was shot earlier this week and whose life support machine has now been turned off leaving a very young family.  Michael Hart and Jacq went to the CID building in Burleigh to deliver the cheque and we also donated our own money for some of the ribbons.  Apparently Snr Cnble Leeming used to work at the Palm Beach station a few years ago so they personally knew of him.

Visitors: Andrew from Broadwater Club

Funds Donated

Last month the Board agreed to pay for some rubber matting to be installed in a Dept of Housing home for 2 young disabled men, Justin & Ash, and it all went through this week. We have been invited to go and meet the recipients at some stage and help them set up the matting, so keep an eye out for further details.

STOP PRESS!

Gold Coast Marathon is looking for Volunteers for 3rd July 2011 to help out with the race day, they need 26 volunteers, and they will pay $1000 to the club if we can help. Yet to find out further details but it maybe a very easy way to raise some money…. Please keep the date free (after the Changeover)

Board Meeting

The meeting is next WEDNESDAY night – 15th June – please let Ken know of any Agenda items. To be held at the Burleigh Surf Club from 6.30pm.
