- Bren handed out registration forms for the District Conference in April. You may attend talks without paying or registering but must register to attend morning and afternoon tea and lunch. Very good speakers including BILL GATES. Australian Outback booking deadline is March 12th. Thank you Bren for such a comprehensive report.

- Catherine informed us that Kate Coombes who is Interact President has won Lions Youth of the Year.

- Jac and Paul are hosting a barbecue Sunday 25th March, further details later.

- Russell advised dictionaries will be presented at Burleigh State School’s assembly Wed. March 7th at 2pm. Please advise Morgan if you wanted to attend.

- Reminder for community meeting at Burleigh Surf Club this Monday 27th at 6pm.

We have been asked to supervise lanes, sell raffle tickets, supervise the silent auction and cook the barbecue. 100% OF PROCEEDS OF RAFFLE, AUCTION AND BARBECUE GO TO OUR CLUB so it is a very worthwhile event to assist in our fundraising endeavours.

The following people have volunteered their time

Karen, Jo and Brad, Jac and Paul, Eva, Doug, Anthony T., Ken, David.

If anyone else would like to help please contact myself.

The following times and duties are required. Can all please let me know which you would like to do and for how long so I can give the organisers a roster.

7am to 12midday. Run raffle and monitor silent auction

11am to 1pm. Count swimmers in lanes

10am to 1.30pm. Cook barbecue

Also the organizers are asking for any prize donations for the raffle and auction, these can be left with Nick at the surf club. So far we have donations of wine from Bren and something from Catherine. Thank you everybody.

Thank you for having me as meeting chairperson, Morgan will be back next week.

HELLO FROM THE STAND-IN PRESIDENT’S DESK!

Good morning fellow Rotarians and friends – you may have noticed that our great leader Morgan was absent this morning and I chaired the meeting for him. I believe I scored a sanctimonious 7 from Geoff and Alan – still this is probably more than I scored during my year as President so hey I’m cool about that and thanks for acting Sergeant Geoff! Sorry to the guys I had coffee with afterwards – too much caffeine = non-stop talk!

I would like to congratulate Graeme Jackson who was inducted into our club last week – great to have you on board Graeme. We had a visit from District 9640 Assistant District Governor John Tunnicliff and our second and last visit (for now as we know he’ll be back!!) from Peter Schutz who gave us a briefing on what events and projects his club runs in Limerick, Ireland.

To see all the children enjoying each other’s company at their own table was great – Anthony T doesn’t have enough with 3 of his own and brought along a friend too! Well done to the parents as all the children were very well behaved. Lulu of course sits with the “big folk” now.

Guest Speaker (Karen)

Peter Schutz told of how his club placed a Shelterbox in the town for donations to Haiti and they raised a staggering € 25,000 and their “Memory Christmas Tree” is a great idea which Rev Colin would like assistance to implement if not for this Christmas for Easter. This project allows people to add a tag to the tree in memory of their loved one and then at Christmas all the tags are blessed in Church – a donation is made to place the tag on the tree – though it is not necessary. What a wonderful idea – could see that working in Stocklands perhaps? We wish Peter a lovely stay and safe trip home. It was also wonderful to hear that the whole of Ireland is one district – Rotary truly is a uniting force. Karen is compiling a list of speakers, if you would like to present “your life as you dare tell it” please contact Karen.

Secretary’s Desk (Ken)

Miami High School have their presentation evening on 14th November – if anyone could attend please liaise with Ken. Thanks to Ken for putting info on the Club’s facebook page and congratulations on his CPR rego plate – still trying to think of a “cute” meaning of that acronym…..

Caningeraba State School were nominated for an award in the special needs department for Australia Day thanks to the extensive efforts of Bren – but unfortunately have not succeeded as apparently there were many schools very worthy of the award – thanks Bren for all the work you did on this.

Youth Desk (Meredith)

RYLA places are open for taking if anyone has an under 29 year old employee they would like to send. Liaise with Meredith please. ADG John Tunncliff mentioned this morning that there are willing applicants within the district if we don’t secure our own from Burleigh.
Club Financials (David)

All in order!

Other Club News

Jo (who recently become a new member too) – our events coordinator is doing a fabulous job on the forthcoming Business Buddies night set for Thursday 17th November. If you have any business associates/possible new members/prizes to donate – please let Jo or Karen know. If you are free to help set up the event can you liaise with Jo or Karen. Thanks girls.

Russell – wow what a huge effort for Donations in Kind (DIK). Russell received an 11kg package of stamps from Yamba which he managed to sell with others he had to raise a massive $1,000. Russell also informed us of a further $450 which he hopes to secure for DIK too. Nothing stops you Russell and we hope your head heals soon (really should have a word with Gillian!). Great work.

Julie – selling Christmas Tree badges to raise funds to purchase gifts for children in hospital this year. Julie is looking for helpers to wrap parcels and donations of gifts. Please liaise with Julie on this.

Anthony T – has a BBQ scheduled for December – date to be announced plus he has contacted Masters to secure any dates going – well done for that Mr T!

Colin – will be holding the annual Christmas Day Lunch for anyone spending Christmas alone – he is expecting around 120 and would love to hear from anyone who is free to help out either before or on the day (sorry I am away freezing in blighty land). Contact Colin if you can help out.

Jac (me) – will be hosting an “après wedding” celebration for Chris and Ann (ex GSE visitor) for some time in January 2012. Let’s have another BYO BBQ – raffle donations welcome – including paintings (but not from Morgan or Geoff!). Date to be set – it will probably be Sunday 22 January so try to keep that date free and remember last time we all went swimming so go easy on the Christmas pudding portions this year (hee hee!).

Burleigh Heads Surf Club Membership Cards – David and Nic are in discussion to get these given out to all members asap.

T-Shirts – Screen Printed (yellow on navy) Navy Blue Polos I will be ordering the following:

Colin x 4, Graeme x 1, Eva x 1 – cost is around $22. I will endeavor to get embroidered ones done too but I know they will cost more. Please let me know if you need one.

Michael has a couple of events planned to support his crazy and brave notion to stay in local politics one being a golf day soon – if you need information please contact Michael.

Next week

So far we are Guest speaker –less so perhaps we can have a brainstorming session on where we want to go with the future of the club, so everyone can have a say.. Ideas please.

This week

We have Damien McConnell from Mindstore Australia visiting us again, he has been before and is always welcome as he tries to get us to think differently about our work/life/Rotary balance.

Last week

(From Jacq’s notes..)
We all enjoyed listening to Chris and his past experiences with Ground Hogs and his future, thanks to Rotary (sorry had to plug us again!) with Thiess. As Chris mentioned, his visa 457 has been approved which allows him temporary residency until Thiess complete the process and put him forward for permanent residency. Ann and Chris have been house hunting as they will have to leave us (and the shoebox flat they are currently staying in!) and move to North Lakes, Brisbane very soon – we wish them both luck and success in the future.

Congratulations to Doug for the fantastic Salvo fund raising he organised for Red Shield Day last Sunday over $1300 from our club – Ken should wear his combo gear again next year as he received a single donation of $50 (think it was from a woman….) – a big thankyou to Eva, Ken, Jacq, Catherine & David and of course Doug for volunteering their time.

Julie mentioned the Cancer Council Race Day 20 Aug $60 she is organizing, contact Julie for more information

The club decided at this morning’s meeting to donate $200 to the legacy fund set up for the young policeman, Damian Leeming, who was shot earlier this week and whose life support machine has now been turned off leaving a very young family. Michael Hart and Jacq went to the CID building in Burleigh to deliver the cheque and we also donated our own money for some of the ribbons. Apparently Snr Cnble Leeming used to work at the Palm Beach station a few years ago so they personally knew of him.

Visitors: Andrew from Broadwater Club

Apologies

Meredith ,Derrick, Anthony Z, Anthony T, Karen, Colin B

Exempt from apologies: Alan Still, Geoff Dubois

Approved Leave of Absences: Meredith Graham

Funds Donated

Last month the Board agreed to pay for some rubber matting to be installed in a Dept of Housing home for 2 young disabled men, Justin & Ash, and it all went through this week. We have been invited to go and meet the recipients at some stage and help them set up the matting, so keep an eye out for further details.

STOP PRESS!

Gold Coast Marathon is looking for Volunteers for 3rd July 2011 to help out with the race day, they need 26 volunteers, and they will pay $1000 to the club if we can help. Yet to find out further details but it maybe a very easy way to raise some money…. Please keep the date free (after the Changeover)

Board Meeting

The meeting is next WEDNESDAY night – 15th June – please let Ken know of any Agenda items. To be held at the Burleigh Surf Club from 6.30pm.

Club Financials

As of the 18th May 2011 our accounts are as follows (details from Catherine)

Club Accounts

Service Accounts

Will Emerton

So after all accounts are settled from the Carols, we are looking pretty healthy at the moment, so great work Catherine!

Vocational Visit for Rotarians, partners, friends

Good morning Rotarians and Friends,

This morning’s meeting was quite well attended considering there were
quite few apologies and it was lovely to see Andrew from Broadbeach Club
and this week he was not even selling anything! We welcomed David P. back
to the fold after his “interesting” trip to Griffith!

Apologies: Meredith (lost her voice – is it in the toy box?); Derrick,
Anthony Z, Anthony T, Karen.

We all enjoyed listening to Chris and his past experiences with Ground
Hogs and his future, thanks to Rotary (sorry had to plug us again!) with
Thiess. As Chris mentioned, his visa 457 has been approved which allows
him temporary residency until Thiess complete the process and put him
forward for permanent residency. Ann and Chris have been house hunting
as they will have to leave us (and the shoebox flat they are currently
staying in!) and move to North Lakes, Brisbane very soon – we wish them
both luck and success in the future.

We had an open forum on Solar Energy and the advantages – thanks to
everyone for their useful input.

Congratulations to Doug for the fantastic Salvo fund raising he
organised for Red Shield Day last Sunday over $1300 from our club – Ken
should wear his combo gear again next year as he received a single
donation of $50 (think it was from a woman….).

The club decided at this morning’s meeting to donate $200 to the legacy
fund set up for the young policeman who was shot earlier this week and
whose life support machine has now been turned off leaving a very young
family. Michael Hart and I went to the CID building in Burleigh to
deliver the cheque and we also donated our own money for some of the
ribbons. Apparently Cble Leeming used to work at the Palm Beach station
a few years ago so they personally knew of him.

Ken read out the mail and there was an interesting fund raiser for the
Leukaemia Foundation which involves a bush walk in Lamington Park – the
details of which I neglected to pick up so hopefully someone else did!

Saturday 25th June – David De Vito Concert : Tickets $49 (show  only);
$100 (dinner and show). If you are interested in going please let me
know and I will arrange for tickets.
Saturday 2nd July – Changeover Dinner at Burleigh Surf Club – Price to
be confirmed
Saturday 20 August – Daffodil Day Tickets $60 (details attached)

Ok, that’s it for today, sorry it’s brief! Have a great weekend.

Jacqueline

Next week

So far we are Guest speaker–less, so perhaps we can have a brainstorming session on where we want to go with the future of the club, so everyone can have a say.. Ideas please.

This week

The guys and girls from the RYLA training weekends are coming to talk to us about the positive effect that RYLA had on them, we know it will be a fantastic talk.

Last week

Wendy John was our guest Speaker and she gave a talk on “Charlie’s Tales” a way of looking at life through her childhood pet dog, Charlie the red-heeler. “Grab it, seize it, do it” was the motto and even white trash lessons (her words) can be inspirational! It was a funny talk on how to get the most out of life, and we all enjoyed Charlie’s exploits especially with the 2 Dalmatians that lived up the road…
Michael, Morgan and Ken did their bit for the environment and fitness levels by walking to the meeting from their houses, great effort guys, maybe we could start a Rotary project out of it!

Jac is speaking to PDG Errol Wildman of D 9630 regarding Flood Relief donation from our club to help out a family/families in the Grantham area.
Morgan spoke of the District Conference, to be held somewhere in Terranora; Pets for Therapy Lunch, Coolibah Downs (contact Jac $30/head); a Rotary Wine & Food Event at Ballina and Salvo’s Red Shield Appeal Day (contact Doug) ALL on Sunday 29th May!
Julie mentioned the Cancer Council Race Day 20 Aug $60 she is organizing, contact Julie for more information

Visitors: Jill Gatty, Salamanca, Tas and Allison Cooper, Elston, Vic

Apologies

David Parker, Karen Thomas, Anthony T, David Ungar, Geoff Stonehouse, Bren Milsom

Exempt from apologies: Alan Still, Geoff Dubois

Approved Leave of Absences: Meredith Graham (although she has indicated that she is having Rotary withdrawals and wants to come back!!)

Board Meeting

The meeting was held on Wednesday 27th April and thanks to Anthony Z, Karen, David U, Jacq, Catherine PT, and Doug for their attendance and input.

Many items were discussed and the minutes will be available soon.

The next Board meeting is tonight (18th May ) at 6.30 Burleigh Surf Club

Romac Trivia Night 13th May 2011

It was as close as we are ever going to get. With 2 tables Burleigh Heads lead the Trivia until the final round where we lost by 2 points, and then found out the Winning table had access to the questions!! It was a fun night for many, especially with Ken and Meredith S dressing up as witches and Wizards (Ken being the ONLY male in the room to dress up) and Jacq getting up on stage to sing Beatles songs.

The Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise do a great job setting it up every year and we hope it raised lots of money for ROMAC. Next year Jacqueline, next year!

A big thanks to Rotarians, friends and relatives that turned up
Jac & Paul Chris Arrington & Ann Hawks
Ken & Meredith S Anthony Z & Kelly D

Hat Day May 20th – Australian Rotary Health

This Friday is Hat Day, the Autralian Rotary Health Day for Mental Health Awareness, maybe we can all wear a hat to breakfast and donations go towards their research.

Club Financials

As of the 31st March 2011 our accounts, after all bills are settled from the Carols, are looking pretty healthy at the moment, so great work Catherine!

Vocational Visit for Rotarians, partners, friends

The visit to the Burleigh Brewing Company has been put on hold until they get back to us and ther Tugun Desal Plant has been recommended as a possible visit site by other clubs

Next week

Our breakfast meeting is the Carols Thank-you Breakfast where we invite sponsors, performers and others involved in the Carols to come along and be recognised for the great work that was done to put on this event. The more members that can attend, the better!

This week

Last year the guys and girls from the Hinze Dam Alliance came and spoke to us about the work that was being performed to improve the Dam’s capacity and effectiveness. Matt and Paul will once again inform us of the job that has been completed and explain the benefits of such work (very timely).

Last week

A quieter attendance this week compared to last week but still good to see the regulars. Michael Knight from England is back in town so that means Bowel Scan is nearing soon! We welcome him and Madeline back to Australia for their annual visit. Our guest speaker was James Charleson, the quiet-spoken young man whom we helped support to attend an orphanage in Uganda at the end of 2010. Due to projector problems and a clash between Apple and all other computer systems, some of the members missed the talk unfortunately but James would love to come back and speak to a packed house.

Apologies

David Parker, Karen Thomas, Jacq P, Ken C, Barbara (who was getting married!)

What a social event! Hot weather, loads of food, great company and a marvelous pool make for a great Sunday outing. Jacq and Paul did a wonderful job of coordinating and cooking and Geoff Stonehouse provided the prizes for an in-house raffle, with many winners on the day. Jacq performed a miracle by picking her own ticket out of the hat and winning the major artwork and Morgan and his partner Melanie also walked away with more prints..(I think Morgan will open an art gallery soon…).

Last week

What a turnout! It was great to see so many Rotarians and visitors on such a beautiful Thursday morning, and it was great to see Meredith and Alexis pay us a visit, welcome back. Fe Taylor came as a guest of Ken Clark, and she runs her own business of Fe Taylor fitness.

Former GSE Chris Arrington and his finance Ann Hawks from Greensboro, North Carolina, USA also paid a visit, as they are now trying to establish their life in Australia, thanks to the help of Jacq Plaice and her family. It’s great to have Chris back in town and we welcome Ann to Qld!

Our Rotarian visitors were: Andrew & Michael from RC Southport; Bernard from RC Bundaberg; Jeff Somers from RC Rowville, Vic. Thankyou all for making the time and effort to come to our club, much appreciated.

We were fortunate enough to have 3 lots of Guest speakers this week, all involving Education.

Acting Principal of Burleigh Heads State School, Peter Tong, and one of the staff, Stephanie, spoke of the desire to establish a Stephanie Alexander Garden for the children of the school, and they were looking for some Rotary muscle to help out on April 2nd & 3rd 2011. The school was successful in obtaining funds to build the Garden but they need the community to help build it. As a club we will be only too happy to help, so please let me know if you can volunteer some time.

Earlier in the year we sponsored Kylie James to attend the Science experience, and Priya Singh from Marymount to attend NYSF, and both were only too happy to come and speak on their newfound skills and knowledge. It was wonderful to hear positive feedback and we are definitely looking at sponsoring future local teenagers in these Rotary Youth Projects.

On Friday 4th Feb our club did a BBQ at Bunnings, and boy, what a hot day! Many thanks must go to Anthony Touzell for his organising and the rest of the club and volunteers – Derrick, David U, Michael, Doug, Eva, Colin Batt and his wife Viv, Anthony Z and Charlie Touzell who wanted to stay and help sell sausages and drinks rather than going to school! We raised over $1130 (gross) but after expenses, closer to about $600. A great effort for a Friday.

CAN EVERYONE PLEASE CHECK WHO HAS THE ROTARY APRONS? THEY HAVE BEEN MISSING SINCE THE LAST BBQ IN NOVEMBER

Apologies

David Parker, Catherine Pevy-Trewartha, Morgan Rick, Nick Owens, (Lulu Owens), Eva Mosler, Karen Thomas.

Please let Anthony Z know if you cannot attend.

So far we have a great list of people coming for the Welcome BBQ for Chris and Ann to be held at Jacq’s place. Please contact Jacq if you are coming.

Once a month, PDG Alan Still is going to write an article for our history to be included in the Talking Points. I thank Alan for his contribution and dedication and the article themselves.

A GLIMPSE FROM THE PAST.

In 1955, the then Rotary District Governors Special Representative , Cec Carey, a member of the Southport Club came to the Coast to arrange the Charter of the Surfers Paradise Club. The area we know as the Gold Coast was called South Coast and consisted of a number of villages including Burleigh. Cec had made arrangements to also visit Burleigh. He reported back to the District Governor that a Club could be charted at Burleigh .The outcome was the formation of the Provisional Club of Burleigh Heads, consisting of 22 Members and the Charter night was to be on 3rd October, 1955. Lindsay Firth from the Southport Club was the first President. Weekly meetings were held at the Chinese cafe which was on the present corner of the highway and Connor Street and could be the site of the present Classification Pole. The café was owned by Billy Nighjoy a member the Club with the dinner fee of 2shillings and sixpence. A weekly bulletin was produced and called “ The Rotator ”. However the CHARTER had not arrived from R.I. and finally the actual Charter Night was held on 8th April, 1956.

In March a resolution was passed to “no longer propose a toast to the Queen”. Projects at this stage included a Shelter shed at Burleigh State School, a donation to the Burleigh Ambulance and cricket bats to the local Club.

In 1957 the Club Sponsored an entrant in the Miss Australia quest and sponsored a migrant family of four from the UK. ( to be continued)
